Bordeaux Style Wines Grown on Steep Diamond Mountain Vineyards Graeser

Wines Wine Club History Richard's Musings Links Ordering Newsletter

There has been so much romanticism over the ages about the virtues of fine aged wine that it would seem that wine lovers enjoyed beautiful mature wine all the time. In a perfect world, maybe we would do just that! Fact is, only a small percentage of wines produced worldwide have the ability to age gracefully and very few of those bottles survive into an ideal maturity.

Most wine is made in a style that suggests early drinking. We tend to age them in the car on the way home from the store. Our wines are extremely fun to drink in their youth. But we also realize that great wine evolves into a more seductive, complex creature with a little bottle age.

With these thoughts in mind, we hold back a library of wines so we can enjoy their development. From time to time, we will share these bottles with our winery friends.

Enjoy and Prosper,
Graeser Winery

This wine drinks like a fine bottle of Bordeaux! Cassis, cocoa, plum and cherry fruit. Like all of Richards wines this one has nice detail and dimension. Finishing with dusty tannins and mineral richness.

1996
Graeser Estate Merlot

Our ’96 Merlot is drinking beautifully. Soft and lush. The perfumy black plum and dense berry fruit core highlight the addition of some nice Cabernet Franc. The wine is quite evolved at this point, it should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Try it with a grilled Duck breast or an autumn stew.

Salute to a single vineyard.
Richard had the privilege of making a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Pointer Run Vineyard for a time. We have 3 vintages bottled under the Gicoma Label and two under the Graeser Label. They are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard is located in the valley floor across the road from Chateau Montelena’s famous vineyards in Calistoga.

They all show impressive deep cherry color with aromas of anise, leather, dried flowers and purple plum. The wines have the benefit of extended bottle aging, they are nicely evolved with generous core fruit, currant, dried plum and soft tannins. This is beautiful aged Cabernet at a price that is hard to beat!
